NBA Responds to Chauvin Verdict

The NBA has responded after the jury reached a verdict on the murder trial of Derek Chauvin at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The former police officer has been found guilty of all charges, which includes second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter.

Lebron James, a vocal leader and supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, tweeted “Accountability”  and Utah Jazz superstar Donovan Mitchell tweeted “God is good all the time…..” with a raised fist and folded hands emoji.  Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash said that some justice was served and that the verdict was “bittersweet,” indicating that there is still work to be done.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver and NBPA executive director Michelle Roberts released a statement claiming that they are “pleased that justice appears to have been served.”

The NBA was preparing to cancel and postpone games depending on how the verdict went.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin arrested and killed George Floyd by kneeling on his neck for about nine minutes, despite the latter desperately saying, “I can’t breathe.”  Floyd’s cries for help has become the slogan of the Black Lives Matter movement.
