Yankees Opening Day Starts with Tremors, Lose to Blue Jays

I guess the city of New York was so excited for the home debut of Juan Soto that its sheer joy caused the ground to shake.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in New Jersey rocked New York Friday morning, causing the entire city into commotion.

The only ones who remained calm were the New York Yankees, who were doing batting practice before their Opening Day game in the Bronx.

The ground started shaking when second baseman Gleyber Torres was taking his bats.  Several people in the area started to look around when they realized what was happening, but Torres remained focused.

The pre-game chatter did not seem to bother manager Aaron Boone, who said that he was used to earthquakes, considering that he was born in California where they are a lot more common.

It seemed that the pre-game pandemonium did not show up today at the ballpark, as the Yankees were shutout 3-0 by the Blue Jays.

Despite Marcus Stroman throwing a gem with six three-hit shutout innings, the bats could not get anything going for him.

Juan Soto, who had reached base safely in the first six games of the season, has looked a lot more human in the past two games, and Aaron Judge has not yet hit his stride.

At the moment, however, the Yankees should be happy where they stand.  Without their ace and reigning Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole, they now sit at 6-2 and have gotten quality production from Carlos Rodon and Stroman.

Considering their unluckiness with injuries in the past few years, perhaps it was a good sign that no one suffered a freak accident while the earthquake was occuring.
