Today, Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians have made the decision to change their team name to the Guardians. The team’s name has been the subject of controversy for many years, with many regarding the name as racist and inconsiderate.
The team’s previous logo was a red-faced Native American named Chief Wahoo which they had for several decades. They changed the logo in 2019.
The team is the second professional American sports team in the past two years to change their name. The NFL’s Washington Football Team was previously called the Redskins until 2020.
