Man United Fans Storm Field in Protest of Ownership

The Liverpool-Manchester United game was cancelled Sunday after United fans stormed the field in protest of the Glazer family, who owns the club.  Under the Glazers’ ownership, the club has become one of the most profitable and valuable sports franchises in the world.

However, this protest was about the integrity of football, not value and money.  The Glazer family, who also own the NFL’s recent Super Bowl-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers, were part of a group of teams who agreed to form a European Super League that was proposed to begin in August of 2021.

The proposal took everyone by surprise, with all six confederations and FIFA renouncing the decision.  Many European fans expressed their anger at their respective clubs, and their cries ultimately led to action.  Clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal withdrew early and expressed regret for involvement in the proposal.

Man United also withdrew from the League and the Glazer family apologized for their involvement.  That has not been enough to please United fans, who believe the ownership of the team is driven by money and not by improving the sport.

As mentioned above, the Glazers own an NFL team. The NFL, like many other American leagues, is notoriously driven by money.  Manchester United is an English club, and its fans are interested in the passion of the game.

The Glazers have stated that they have no intention of selling the club.
