The Baltimore Ravens traded offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr to the Kansas City Chiefs today for an extra first-round pick, third-round pick, and fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft. The Chiefs also received a 2021 second-round pick and 2022 sixth round pick.
Orlando Brown Jr, formerly a right tackle, was moved to left tackle for the Ravens last season after Pro-Bowler Ronnie Stanley was placed on injured reserve after a season-ending ankle injury. Brown had a breakout season and earned his second Pro-Bowl nod.
Left tackles get paid more than right tackles, due to the extra responsibility of protecting the quarterback’s blind side. They also are responsible for blocking the opposition’s best pass-rusher. Brown made it clear this offseason that he wanted to be paid like a left tackle.
In March, Chiefs controversially released both of their starting tackles, two-time pro-bowler Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz. Both of them were effective pass blockers for superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes and helped the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl championship in 40 years in 2019. They were both injured in this year’s Super Bowl, and it showed, as Mahomes was pressured on every play in an embarrassing 31-9 blowout.
The addition of Orlando Brown will help a team that really needs to invest in pass protection.
