All-Pro right guard Marshal Yanda has decided to call it quits after 13 seasons in the NFL. He had the job of protecting Kyle Boller, Joe Flacco, and Lamar Jackson for over a decade as well as paving lanes for 1,000 yard running backs that include Ray Rice, Justin Forsett, and Mark Ingram. An eight-time Pro Bowl selection, he is widely considered to be one of the best guards of his generation and a strong candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
His announcement comes on the cusp of a new era in Ravens history where Lamar Jackson led the team to a franchise-best 14-2 record last season. Yanda was a major contributor to the team’s success, as he blocked for one of the greatest rush offenses in NFL history. He also made the Pro Bowl after the season, which led many to believe that he would come back for one more spell. According to Yanda, it was not meant to be.
“You want people to want you back,” Yanda said to the media. “That’s the way to end it. Nobody wants to fade out. You want to go out strong.”
The news of Yanda’s retirement will most likely change how the Ravens’ enter the offseason. They will have to find a replacement at right guard now, in addition to improving their pass rush and receiving core. Although Jackson and Ingram are elite offensive weapons, Yanda’s veteran intellect and grit in the trenches had a lot to do with their success. It will be tough to replace a generational talent on the offensive line.
All in all, Marshal Yanda should be celebrated as one of the greatest Ravens of all time along with Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Jonathan Ogden. His next NFL move is most likely a bust in Canton.
